She is knitting

twisting the yarn to save her life.
Each stitch hikes across a swollen river.
If she stops her roof will explode.

A dropped stitch is a child dangled.
Purl is a letter sent in anger.
Knit is a DNA strand in a Petri dish.
Cables are lifelines thrown
in dark waters.

Each pattern must be followed, as if
oxygen depended on it.
Match the needles to the weight
or risk amputation.
Cast off like a cruise liner.
