Rachel Sawaya is a Kiwi writer living in Melbourne. She has a Masters of Creative Writing from Victoria University, for which she received the Biggs Family Prize in Poetry in 2011. She won the 2012 Takahē Poetry Competition and has been published in Sport and Poetry New Zealand. Rachel spends the majority of her time bemoaning the fact that Melbourne is actually pretty cold in winter and that she hasn’t yet managed to see a snake in the Australian wild (or, more accurately, in the Australian suburbs). Rachel’s poems here deal with biological and emotional loss, and explore what meaning can be found in experiencing it.
