New Gods for the Anthropocene

Robert Stratford

for Elena Louverdis

There are new roads
for new summer road trips,

new bridges over new
gulches of gorse and clay.

There are new polar vortexes
bringing home new deeper cyclones –

something new and frozen
rattles down on old corrugations.

There are new prayers for
the changing ocean currents,

new sacrifices for the demon seasons –
for the new Gods in a new geology.

New Bibles are being written
for new angels of better progress.

There are new ways of making love
after the end of the world.

New friends are singing in
new choirs, holding hands

in new ways of celebrating
our connection to everything –

new ways we can
all belong.
