Submissions Guidelines
Kia hiwa ra!
4th Floor is a literary journal showcasing excellent work from the Whitireia creative writing
programme students. It features work by past and present students and tutors of the programme.
The journal is edited by Hinemoana Baker. Baker is a published poet and author, has had plays and
film scripts produced, and is also known as a musician, broadcaster and producer. She
tutored poetry at Whitireia in 2007 and 2008, and also teaches the Whitireia poetry
online course. Her publishing team includes students from the Whitireia
Diploma in Publishing (Applied).
What to submit
- Prose: Short fiction, creative non-fiction or novel excerpts to a maximum of
1000 words. Longerpieces may be considered at the editor’s discretion.
Maximum of two pieces per submission.
- Poetry: Send up to five poems per submission.
When to submit
The deadline for submission is May of each year, and each issue is published the following November.

The fine print
We are unable to publish previously published work, unless that publication was in the 2003 Whitireia anthology A Magpie Stole My Heart. We are also unable to publish any work which quotes song lyrics, or includes any text which is the work of another writer.
As a non-profit publication, 4th Floor is unable to offer payment for contributions. For all material we accept, copyright will remain with the author.
