Mel is a lazy creative. Born in Papua New Guinea and raised in Aotearoa, Mel enjoys sharing her life’s experiences through the art of spoken word poetry. In 2021, she won the ‘Spirit of the Slam’ award at the Wham Bam Tauranga Poetry Slam. Since then, Mel has enjoyed sharing her spoken word pieces at various Blabla Events nights and at local church services. This piece is her first published poem, written for the purpose of being consumed by readers, rather than listeners. She talks a lot to the voices in her head, so she enjoys putting those thoughts into words to share with others. Mel graduated from Whitireia in 2021 with a Diploma in Writing for Creative Industries. Mel has a pile of poems gathering dust, that you will hopefully be able to read in the near future – when she decides to stop getting in her own way.
