Johanna Knox still remembers the first time it occurred to her to lie: she was four and wearing her best dress – all ready to go out. While she waited, she asked her dad if she could help him with house-painting, as it looked a lot of fun. He said, ‘Go check with your mother.’ When her mother said no, Johanna’s brain cogs began to whirr. It didn’t end well. Since then, she has always felt that bad things happen when you lie and has occasionally reconfirmed this. Like the time she was fired from her job at a chocolate shop for cramming stock into her mouth whenever the manager was out on errands. Happily, she’s currently working on a book of true stories about some of New Zealand’s amazing environmental, social and cultural guardians – due out in 2019.
