VERNE BARRETT

Waiata of Secret Wings

(inspired by Māori creation myths)

Alone is the void – te pō
alone and void the taste of it;
alone and void the touch, the smell
the hearing and the seeing of things unseen;
the dark sleeping void of the unborn world’s still dream.

Alone is the secret world …
Alone the sky
and the sea.

Alone and unknown are all things;
until eye sees, tongue tastes,
smell is known and ear hears;
touch feels, and the world longs
for itself to be, giving birth
to both, the dark and the light –
to time and eternity.
