To seat 23E

At the outset nothing is between

the woman in the aisle seat

and me in the window seat

except you, 23E, and your emptiness

across which eyes meet

and pleasantries exchange;

but then your sly transformation

into a pool of first knowing, a middle that

she and I suddenly find ourselves out in;

and during flight your quiet drawing over

of a canopy beneath which nothing registers

but the closeness of talk;

and at arrival your polite withdrawal

into unoccupation, and your release

of space that she and I may carry off between us.
